Pembrey 3rd & 4th May

Family fortunes

The Doran family continued its domination of the Kumho Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship when Pat and son Liam won the second and third rounds in the eight-event series at Pembrey on Sunday and Monday May 3-4.
Despite the fact that they left the South Wales track with both event wins in the bag, the event was far from smooth for the Dorans who experienced a rollercoaster ride of fluctuating fortunes on the way to success.
Liam Doran (Sittingbourne) was eliminated from Sunday's event when his Fiesta ST ERC suffered engine failure and the Hydrex Racing team then had its work load increased when an engine bay fire halted Pat Doran (Winkleigh) in the second qualifying heat. Getting the car back on track in time for the third heat, the team helped Doran Snr, to do enough to qualify for the A final. From fifth place on the grid, Doran then worked his way into the lead and won the race ahead of Ollie O'Donovan (London) and current champion Lawrence Gibson (Banbridge).
The Superfinal featured the same three drivers, Doran running at the head of the field throughout and taking a clear win as O'Donovan contained Gibson's challenge and posted second in his first championship event of the year.
With the team's spare engine fitted overnight, Doran Jnr. was back in the running for Monday's round three. As on Sunday, it was O'Donovan who qualified on pole for the Supercar A final, Liam and Pat Doran alongside him. The front row qualifiers reversed their order in the race, Doran Snr. leading his son and O'Donovan from start to finish.
In the Superfinal the younger Doran got the drop on his rivals at the start but the race was halted in the third lap after a broken camshaft forced Pat Doran to stop his Fiesta, the course marshals then deciding his stricken car was not in a safe position.
Liam Doran led again in the restart, pulling away from O'Donovan to take the win and add to his victory in round one of the championship.
Behind the leading pair, Steve Hill (Aylesbury) fought a mighty battle to hold of Gibson to improve on his Sunday finish by one place and earn a place on the podium.
